Fred Welker began making guitars on a dare.

The story begins in 1999 when Fred was sitting at a table in one of his favorite local watering-holes. As rumor has it, Fred watched as Tom T. Hall's son and some other local musicians where discussing their recent gig of providing entertainment for NASCAR pit crews prior to each Winston Cup race.

The men where bad-mouthing their recent instrument purchases from big-name guitar makers, when one of the guys turned to Fred and said, "You know Fred, I bet you could make a better guitar then this."

After jokingly answering yes, Fred began to think about the challenge of making a fine guitar... and the rest is history.
